EU Urges Coordinated Border Action After Deadly Ceuta Migrant Crisis

BRUSSELS — European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has called for a unified European response to strengthen external border security following the deadly migrant crisis in Ceuta, Spain’s North African enclave.

Her remarks came as the European Union prepares to review the incident and discuss measures to address irregular migration.

Speaking after a conference call with European Commissioner for Internal Affairs and Migration Magnus Brunner and European Commissioner for the Mediterranean Dubravka Šuica, von der Leyen said the EU should enhance cooperation among member states and partner countries to improve border management.

She outlined several priorities, including reinforcing external border controls, stepping up efforts against migrant smuggling networks, improving early warning systems, expanding cooperation with partner countries, and making migrant return procedures more effective.

According to Spanish authorities, approximately 69,500 migrants have been returned to Morocco following the crisis. Officials also reported that the death toll had risen to 72 on the Spanish side and 11 on the Moroccan side.

Von der Leyen said the return of the majority of migrants reflected close cooperation between Spanish and Moroccan law enforcement agencies. She added that no migrants had reached mainland Spain or other parts of the European Union during the incident, while emphasizing the need for continued vigilance at the bloc's external borders.

The European Commission said it has been supporting Spain since the crisis began and welcomed calls by several European leaders to convene an extraordinary videoconference to assess the situation and strengthen the EU's collective response to irregular migration.
